Hi Michael!
I personally enjoyed this piece and was curious to learn your perception of the reason highly intelligent people lack empathy. Although I didn’t find a connection spelled out, I felt like I could read between the lines (based on my personal perceptions, of course).
Relevant to the reasons you shared, I think lack of empathy is a survival (defense and preservation) mechanism. I’m extremely empathetic, until it backfires (and then I shut off my empathy, mostly, for the person).
I’ve also battled overthinking for as long as I can remember (I’m 40). I think self awareness, being curious about the reasons behind others’ behaviors, and a willingness to grow are some of the most positive aspects of high intelligence.
I found it disappointing to see so many readers lacked empathy in their response.
